Abstract
Micro-perforated masks laid over a tissue section for MALDI imaging. The plate is opaque or opaque-coated and less than 150 µm thick, and bears regularly spaced openings; the spacing is set so that the diameter D of the largest circle containing a single opening exceeds d / sin θ, where d is the laser beam diameter and θ its angle of incidence on the sample.
The mask therefore defines the pixel grid physically, so that spatial resolution is set by the openings rather than by the laser spot. Manufacturing processes and use for MALDI imaging are also claimed.

Context
Developed with IEMN (Vincent Thomy, Nicolas Verplanck). The only patent in this set where spatial resolution is addressed mechanically, by microfabrication, rather than chemically.
Abstract as published
The present invention relates to masks for use in mass spectrometry, in particular MALDI, tissue section analysis, comprising a plate made of or coated by an opaque material and having a thickness of less than 150 µm, said plate comprising regularly spaced openings. The invention also concerns processes of manufacture of the masks, the use thereof for MALDI imaging of tissue sections, and a method for MALDI imaging of a tissue section using said masks.
